Welcome to
Haak'u Learning Center

In partnership with parents and the community, the Haak'u Learning Center provides a comprehensive early childhood program that offers developmentally appropriate services for children ages 0 - 5 with or without disabilities and their families. The program ensures:
• That all families are respected for their unique cultural, ethnic and linguistic differences
• Encouragement in the building of positive relationships among parents, staff and community members
• A supportive learning environment for all children
• The social, emotional, cognitive and physical development of each child

The Haak'u Learning Center program will provide these services in order to strengthen and enhance life skills and to establish a strong foundation that supports positive growth for families.

In order to achieve these goals the program needs parent involvement.  Listed are several committees that the program has which will insure parental input into the program.

Head Start

The Head Start Program provides developmentally appropriate services for children ages 3 to 5 and their families.  The program also provides services to children ages 2½to 3 who have an Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP).  The program will ensure:
• A supportive, nurturing learning environment for all children.
• The 8 Domains of the Child Outcomes experiences are provided for each child.
• All families and extended members are respected for their unique, cultural, ethnic and linguistic differences.
• Positive experiences are provided to promote Acoma traditions, beliefs, and the Keres language.
• To build positive relationships among parents, staff and community members.
• That parents are the “first teachers” of their children, and will continue to engage parents in all aspects of the program.

The program provides these services to strengthen and enhance life skills, which establishes a strong foundation that supports positive growth for families.  The academic services measured by the Child Outcomes Framework are designed to prepare children to meet the challenges set forth in the No Child Left Behind Act.

Child Care Services

The Haak’u Learning Center Child Care Program is designed in part to provide monetary help to low-income families who are in need of Quality Child Care Services. It is operated by a grant from the Department of Health and Human Services/Administration for Children and Families, Child Care Bureau.

The Program provides childcare services for the families of our community. We strive to provide the highest quality in childcare through our staff, materials, and parent involvement. The Child Care program will foster the development of each child through age-appropriate developmental skills implemented in a learning environment that focuses on the child's health and safety.  It's also a place where we can all have fun.

Providers focus on each child's strengths and weaknesses and provide stimulation through speaking, listening, modeling, and age-appropriate activities to develop self-awareness and self-acceptance.  Children will learn about themselves and the world around them through cultural activities, games, play, songs, dance, creative dramatics, arts and crafts, stories, special visitors, and field trips.

The program has a Center Base infant and toddler room which provides services for sixteen (16) children.  The ages range from 6 weeks to 3 years old.  Each of the two classrooms will provide care for a specific age group:
• Infant room (6 weeks to 1½ Years  Old)
• Toddler room (1½to 3 Years Old)

The Wrap-Around classroom is for parents of children ages 3 - 5 years of age who need child care services before and after Head Start hours and for the summer months.

The program also has In-Home Child Care service which is for parents who may prefer a relative to sign-up as an in-home provider in order to watch their children. If anyone is interested in becoming a child care provider please feel free to contact our office and we will send all the necessary information to you.

To be eligible for child care assistance parents must: (1) reside within the Pueblo of Acoma reservation boundaries or have temporary housing in Grants or Albuquerque in order to work or attend school. (2) be an enrolled member of the Pueblo of Acoma or a Tribal member of a federally recognized tribe, (3) if a member of a federally recognized tribe they must work for the Pueblo of Acoma, (4) meet the income requirements based on the Haak’u Learning Center Child Care Program’s Sliding Fee Scale (5) be actively involved in employment, school, training activities or job searching.
