Pueblo of Acoma Joins the Pueblos of Laguna, Zuni and the Hopi Tribe in Signing Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with NM State Land Office Regarding State Lands within the Mt. Taylor TCP

Acoma, NM-Today the Pueblo of Acoma joined the Pueblos of Laguna, Zuni and the Hopi Tribe of Arizona in entering into a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the New Mexico State Land Office regarding State lands that fall within the Mt. Taylor Traditional Cultural Property (TCP) area.

“We are pleased that the NM State Land Office through the NM State Land Commissioner has agreed to listen to the voice of the Tribes and consider cultural impacts to Kaweshtima, Mt. Taylor, when development is being proposed on state lands within the TCP.” said Acoma Governor, Randall Vicente.

The Mt. Taylor TCP was sought by the Pueblos of Acoma, Zuni and Laguna, the Hopi Tribe and the Navajo Nation as a means to inform outside interests on the cultural and historical importance of Mt. Taylor.  The NM Cultural Properties Review Committee voted in June of 2009 to list the TCP which included over 316,456 contributing resources including more than 1000 archaeological sites, plants, animals, gathering sites and view sheds.

“For the Pueblo of Acoma, today marks a true partnership with the NM State Land Office in honoring our long standing commitment towards stewardship of all lands including those under the management of the State Land Office.  We applaud NM Land Commissioner, Ray Powell for understanding the Tribal perspective and his willingness to work with Tribes.”
