Stages of Change Model
Precontemplation: No Recognition of an Issue
“I don’t think I have a problem.”
“I can do the time standing on my head.”
Contemplation: Some recognition of issue and impact on self/family/community
“I see that my kids wish I would spend more time with them instead of…”
Preparation: Preparing to make changes, exploring options
“I’m ready to check out…,” I need to take care of my…..”
Action: Actively making choices and changes in lifestyle
“I’m taking my classes…sessions…going to the doctor….etc.”
Maintenance: Maintenance of changes in lifestyle.
Keeping up with appointments, changes in habits, taking care of self…etc.
Providing treatment we need to speak the “same language” acknowledging the stage the client finds themselves at, while still elicting motivations to change.
